The Lapchi Trek unveils the untouched beauty of the Rolwaling region, a geographically isolated area with vibrant flora, elusive wildlife like the snow leopard, and captivating folklore. This small Himalayan range, a twisted backbone between the road to Tibet and the Rolwaling Valley, remains overlooked by most travelers and mountaineers. The legendary Tibetan yogi Milarepa once meditated in a cave here, surviving on stinging nettles and leaving behind a legacy of spiritual significance. The trek follows the Tama Koshi River from Jagat to Lamabagar, winding through dense bamboo and cloud forests to the remote Lapchi Kang, beneath the unclimbed Ama Bamare rock spire and the dramatic Kookur Raja Darra (King Dog Ridge).
Lapchi Trek Details
Located in the Rolwaling region along the Nepal-Tibet border, the Lapchi Trek is a hidden gem protected by the Gaurishankar Conservation Area. It requires a special GCA permit and TIMS card. This sacred Buddhist pilgrimage site, where Milarepa performed miracles and left sacred marks like footprints, is one of three holy mountains in Jambudvipa, alongside Kailash and Tsari, revered by Buddhists and Hindus alike. At approximately 4,850 meters, Lapchi Mountain is accessible from Nepal without a Tibet visa, offering an affordable yet profound adventure.
Best Time to Trek
The ideal months for the Lapchi Trek are March to October, when the weather is favorable for exploring Milarepa’s Hermitage and its cave hermitages. The trail, starting from Lamabagar, meanders along the Tama Koshi River through bamboo and cloud forests, leading to the remote Lapchi Kang beneath Ama Bamare and Kookur.
Lapchi Trek Itinerary
Our 11-day fully supported camping trek, priced at USD 1,499 per person (minimum two participants), offers an immersive experience for adventurers and pilgrims. A shorter 7-night, 8-day itinerary is available for those with limited time. Safety is our priority, and while we aim to follow the planned itinerary, adjustments may be made due to unforeseen natural events. The trek can be combined with the Rolwaling Valley Trek or extended to include Bigu Gompa, blending cultural and natural exploration. Options include basic camping, teahouse, or homestay experiences for a deeper connection to local traditions.
- Travel by public bus or private jeep from Kathmandu, passing through Singate.
- Journey duration: 7–10 hours.
- Overnight in Lamabagar.
- Begin with a short local jeep ride through a 1,300-meter tunnel built by a hydro company.
- Trek on a rough trail due to ongoing road construction.
- Arrive at Lower Lumnan, a winter settlement.
- Follow a scenic streamside trail with views of Mt. Gaurishankar.
- Reach Lapchi Village and visit Lapchi Monastery and yak herders’ homes.
- Overnight at Lapchi Gumba.
- Full-day hike to explore Seph high-altitude surroundings.
- Return to Lapchi Gumba for the night.
- Day hike to Ramding Namgoma, a site of spiritual significance.
- Return to base camp.
- Retrace steps from Lapchi to Lumnan.
